About the Artist

Tim Goodman
The oldest of four children, Tim Goodman was born in Berkeley in 1958. After one year in Berkeley, the family embarked on a series of moves that took them from the San Francisco Bay Area to southern California and back again before leaving the state and country altogether for England, where Tim spent his high school years attending the American School in London. Living abroad at such a seminal age and having the opportunity to travel to India, Africa and the rest of Europe during that time was an extraordinary experience that greatly expanded the young teenager's perspective of the world.

After graduating from A.S.L., Goodman returned to California, eventually enrolling at the University of California at Berkeley where he graduated in 1985. While attending Berkeley, he discovered photography, the black and white kind, and soon found himself spending more time with his camera or in the darkroom, than with his studies. Only by shifting his academic focus to the study of art, specifically American Art of the 20th century, was Goodman able to salvage his waning academic career.

After graduation, Goodman briefly tried his hand at architectural photography but found the work to be less creative than anticipated. Instead he chose to pursue his love of gardens and architecture and after much time spent in the field and years of study, created Goodman Landscape Design in 1988. In 1990, his wife, artist Lisa Toby, became his partner in the firm. Over the years G.L.D. has been very successful, designing and installing high end landscape architecture across the greater Bay Area. Their work has garnered many state and regional awards and has been extensively published.

The Goodman's structured G.L.D. in a way that allowed them considerable time to pursue their art. For Lisa, that translates into hours spent before the canvas and for Tim, weeks on the road in his V.W. camper photographing and later, in the darkroom printing.

Aside from photography, Tim's other interests include literature and western U.S. history, backpacking in the Sierra, music and baseball. He lives in Berkeley, California with Lisa and son, Cole.

About the photographs: All of the work pictured here was created with large and medium format cameras. The photographs from "Where Trees Give Way" were printed with a Durst enlarger utilizing an El Nikkor lens onto Ilford Galleri FB paper that has been selenium toned for depth and permanence. The earlier portfolios were printed on Agfa Portriga Rapid and similarly toned with selenium.
